Bosco

A very happy birthday to my mother, Beautiful Bev.  I won’t disclose her age but lets just say she’s slightly older than me.  My brother’s and I put together a few GTKY questions for you to enjoy.  Meet Bosco….

1) You always claim to have always been an angel growing up. What was the thing you did to get you in the most trouble?
One “trouble” activity that I can remember is (when I was in grade school) I beat up the boy down the street for making fun of me and my sneakers.  My parents bought me boy (low top) black sneakers as they were sturdier than girls sneakers (I walked on the side of my shoes and ruined them).  Back in those days, girls NEVER wore boys low or high top sneakers.  Shoes were a necessity not a fashion statement.  My parents couldn’t afford to keep buying me shoes.

2) Pick a song that represents you. One from your childhood and one from now.
Can’t pick a song from each era; will pick an artist.  Young adult era was Barry Manilow (still like him; last concert your dad and I went to was his–5 years ago); today, I would say Josh Groban…both can sing to me all day, any day.  Barry because he is such a great entertainer and I have loved his songs; Josh because of his beautiful voice, humor, and good looks.

3) If there was one thing you would’ve changed about how you raised your children what would it be?
We taught you all to be fair to each other and others; however, we neglected to explain or prepare you for the times when others are not fair back towards you all or don’t try to reciprocate at any time when you continuously do good deeds for them.  We regretted these issues many times while watching you all let your friends or others take advantage of you.

4) Of all the dances you’ve seen, what is in your opinion, the weirdest one to ever be a fad
I don’t know any new dances or their titles since I don’t follow that scene any more.  However, in my day, I think the weirdest might have been the jerk.

5) What super hero/ cartoon did you want to be growing up?
You are talking to the wrong parent about watching super heroes and aspiring to be like one.  If I had to choose from those few female heroes of my youth, I would probably say Wonder Woman.  They probably modeled the Wonder Woman character after me because of my raising you four bratz, working full time, traveling for the job, etc.  lol

6) If you had the chance to change one thing in your life what would it be aside from giving birth to Jared?
Finishing college immediately following high school.  There were many years of discrimination that I went through in the workforce not just because of that fact but also because I was a female.  Because of what I went through in the business world, it is very important that all of my children get one or more degrees…if you do it immediately following high school, it is so much easier.  It was really hard going to college when I was pregnant with Jacs and then Brett, as well as work full time and keep a house.  I wished your dad finished his PhD; all he had left was his thesis which he said would take him another year to write but chose to get married and have a family instead.  Not one of my siblings graduated from the same college.

7)When you were 15 was this the life you imagined having?
Yes and no. I was interested in social work back in high school, although I think I would have also enjoyed something in the sports field.  However, my dad was so insistent that we get a government job with great benefits as soon as we could; therefore, my high school curriculum followed that path.  I think 6/7 of the 8 of us kids in my family started out in the DC or Fed Govt early on; some changed course afterward, but at least 4 of us stayed the course…after all that I went through with your dad’s physical problems the last 10 years, I am sure it was God’s plan having my dad steer me into the Fed Govt so early.  Great medical and retirement plans…exactly what was needed at the end of your dad’s life.

8) Which of your children turned out most like you?
Hard to say as I can see me in each of you.  You and Brett have my drive as things don’t come as easily as we would like them to be naturally, so we have to overcompensate in the business/academia world.  Brett has my impatience.  Brady definitely has my emotional side and need for humor, although mocho Brett surprised me and was the most emotional person the day your father died.  Jared has my “social” side; when with close friends, he needs to be the life of the party; however, in a group of people he doesn’t know or aren’t closest buddies, he is an intravert.  Overall, I would say Jacqi is now most like me–especially since becoming a mom…you ”

9) If you could live anywhere in the world for a year where would it be?
I traveled so much in the US for so long for my job, I have never yearned to live anywhere in particular or to go overseas (been there a few times).  It is not the place where I need to live as opposed to the people with whom I am living with or near.  Your father’s and my plan was always to end up in an area that was in somewhat close proximity to all or most of our kids; of course, I had hoped it was also not far from my mom/siblings. Proximity to my family is more important than the place. I would rather look at a familiar face directly in front of me than a seascape or mountaintop.  As an example, Hawaii was one of the two most beautiful places we visited; but your dad nor I ever wanted to live there.

10) What tv show best depicts your life?
No one individual show reflects my life.  Chicago Fire reminds me of my youth and life as a fireman’s daughter. Roseanne — I just understood her humor and attitude; I think because I came from an unprivileged family and she said everything I felt or would like to say at times but were always told by my parents never to say out loud or do.  I miss that show. Big Bang Theory reminds me of the early years of being married to your dad (a brilliant physicist) who I had to ask constantly to “translate” or rephrase his verbiage into plain-speak (aka Bev-speak).  He used words I never heard of in typical conversation. Up All Night reflects adult life trying to juggle kids, hubby, and work.  Go On reflects my current stage of life–adjusting to life after your dad’s passing and trying not to lean on folks to help me through the stages.  Hopefully, my next stage will entail Touched by An Angel (vs 666 Park Avenue).

**Extra Credit: Can you guess who wrote each question?
I can see an overlap of a few questions by multiple kids; however, I think most of them were done by Jacs.  Brady #5; Brett #1; Jared-None
Answer: Brady (1-4), Brett (5-7), Jacqi (8-10)

Sweet Baby E

Fourth very fast months ago Isabella, Caleb, Donavan and I welcome our newest addition, Elijah Bennett Almond.  He is so sweet and happy.  He is by far my easiest baby.  He took to nursing and pretty much just eats and sleeps.  When he is awake he just giggles all the time and coos.  At 4 months he weighs 16lbs and is 26in.  He is rolling over and trying so hard to sit up on his own.  Here are a bunch of photos of him and my other loves

Napa Valley Ragnar 2012

A couple weeks ago the Dirty Calistogans took on the Rangar Relay for the 2nd time. You can see our run last year right here.  We lost quiet a few runners to pregnancy this year so half of our team was new to the race.  I was in Van #2 this year with all the boys except for one (Chip was in van #1 with all the girls).  Our van was rightfully named “5 Sweaty Guys and a Lady with her Breast Pump.”   In case you missed it (probably because I havent blogged much) Don and I welcomed baby #3 (Sweet Elijah) in June leaving me 6 LONG weeks to train for the race.  With that said I decided to take the shortest leg since I had the shortest amount of time to train.  Here is what I learned from this…. Shortest does not mean easiest.  I actually had one of the hardest leg of the course (note to self check elevations prior to agreeing).  Here are my legs and some pictures of the Dirty Calistogans.

SoccerStopper

Happy Birthday to my littlest brother of all Jared!  Today he turned 24 and in similar fashion to Brady’s birthday post I asked him a few questions about how it feels to know he’s quickly approaching a quarter century.  Enjoy this GTKY.

1. When you were 5 what did you think you would be doing when you turned 25?
What kind of question is this? I don’t remember what I wanted to be when I was 5! Do you?? I remember what I was told: That I played soccer and liked mac-n-cheese. Therefore, when I was five, I think I wanted to be a professional color book color-er.

2. What would you like to do before you turn 30?
Find a job and move the F out of my mom’s house. PLEASE! Oh, and maybe have visited a couple places outside of the country. Top Choices: Europe (namely England, Germany, Spain), Australia, or Japan. I also think being married is on my list. I want kids, and I’d rather be young enough to coach and practice w/ them.
3.  What has been your proudest accomplishment?
I’m quite proud of winning 3 state championships in soccer. I went through some tough times during high school, but one thing I always worked hard at was soccer. And the best part was that the guys on my team had the same amount of passion and competitive drive to work just as hard. Winning those championships really made it all fun and worth it.
4.  Does turning a quarter century freak you out?
No, not really scared about that. Only for the fact that I’m a little behind the 8-ball on where I would expect to be. But then again its only a “quarter century” minus 1, so I still have a lot of time ahead of me…I hope.
5. What is something you wish every one knew about you?
That I’m not just a piece of eye candy. I’m smart and funny, on top of being gorgeous. And that I hate any commercial reference to my name i.e. Subway or Jared’s Jewelers.
6.  What is something no one knows about you?
Well I don’t know if there is anything about me that NO one knows. Probably something most people don’t know is that I like to write. Always have. I won the D.A.R.E. Essay competition in 5th grade and my 2nd grade teacher had a story I co-wrote w/ my friend, Mike DiNuzzo, put into hard back (something she didn’t do for any of the other students). I like to write all sorts of things; stories, sports articles, commentaries. I actually, at some point, want to write a play or script. But I’m very self conscious about my writings. Not so much that people won’t like them, but that people won’t read them. That, to me, is more humiliating.

7. What song represents your 23rd year?
Seriously? Ugghhh. I guess Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror”. After a really tough year last year, I kind of took a look at myself and tried to decide the things I like and the things I wanted to change and make better. I’m hoping for the changes I made are impactful and pay off in this next year.
8. What song will represent your 24th year?
Billy Madison–Back to school. I hope to finally finish up and get a degree or certification of some sort. Don’t think any other song would fit better than that.

9. Name one thing you want to do before you turn 25.
Find a stable job and move into my own apartment. Absolutely a must. On a lighter note, maybe travel somewhere in the US I haven’t been. Places I have my eye on: New Orleans, Vegas, Grand Canyon, Seattle, New York, Austin. I’m also open to suggestions of places that are a “must-see”
10.  If you had to choose you would pick me as your favorite sibling right?
Well I’ve always been told I’m the milk man’s son. So are you claiming me now??? I’m getting a lot of mixed signals…
11. Here’s your opportunity to freestyle. Write whatever you want!
In this space, I wanted to touch on a recent blog post my sister has written about: Chopped–Carter Addition. I just wanted to clarify that I was the one who was robbed. Over all for creativity and flavor, I scored strongest on average across the board. Where I lost points was in the presentation. While I think I had one of the better presentations in the first round, I admit my dessert presentation was a hideous. But the flavors meshed together well and I had the 2nd best tasting dish of the round. I DO NOT agree that presentation should hold as much weight as flavor when it comes to a cooking contest. My brother Brett had the worst dish in the first round by far, yet some how ended up winning the whole competition. The would lead people to believe that his dish had to taste FAR and above better than every other dish judged. I tasted all the dishes and was assured that no ones dish was that much more delicious than anyone elses. Which means there would have to have been inconsistencies in the judging. I want a recount! Or at the least an asterisk on the title. Or maybe it is that I’m just a sore loser and still bitter…I’ll let you all be the judge…We are encouraging new, unbiased judges to step forward. We only ask that you help contribute to the grocery bill. It ain’t cheap to host one of those events!!!
EXTRA CREDIT

If you could have a theme song every time you entered the room what would it be?
You don’t have a theme song everytime you walk into the room? psshh. Lame. Kanye West–Good Life. Think positive, be positive.

What food best represents you?
I’m like Pizza. Everybody likes Pizza. I’m a little bit doughy, but not too much. I like the sauce and I’m totally cheesy, but I get that from my dad.

If you could be any super hero who would you be?
Well of the Avengers, I’m definitely Thor. I’m handsome, funny, and god-like. So it only fits. Of the X-men, I like Beast.  But my favorite Superhero is the Green Lantern. I always strayed away from the most popular characters, like a Batman, Superman, or Spiderman. I liked Green Lantern, 1. because Green is my favorite color and 2. I liked the idea of having to use your imagination to solve problems. Plus he wasn’t always the incorruptible character like the others. He has his flaws, but always tries to do the right thing.

What is your favorite holiday?
No question. Halloween. I LOVE Halloween. I love the decorations and surprises. I love haunted houses. If I was given a million dollars to spend frivalously, I’d totally create my own haunted house. I have SO many good ideas. I like having to be creative and come up w/ a costume no one expects. I usually make my own costume, so its really fun to see how elaborate I can get on about a $15 budget. I’ve been Pinocchio (w/ my own hand made Jimminey Cricket), a slightly creepy mail man w/ a curiously placed package to deliver (Thank you Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake for the idea), and an old Western bartender w/ a portable bar stocked w/ real alcohol (I ended up throwing up all over myself). Can’t wait for this years. I haven’t decided what I want to be yet, but I’m sure it’ll be memorable.

While home in July we hosted the first ever Carter Chopped Competition.   Two Carter boys and two Almond boys squared off in a cooking match that is still be debated today.

  1. You must chop contestants
  2. Use a point scoring system and stick to it
  3. Don’t let those drinking wine calculate the points

  5. Halva really isnt that tasty

Here were the ingredients:

Bella the Beautiful

As promised here is my Isabella focused post.  She is going to be 2 on the 29th… already!!  I still can’t believe it.  She is doing amazingly well.  Every time I try to figure out how many words she has she’s saying 4 or 5 new ones.  She is definitely our little conversationist.  She still gets shy around people she doesn’t know but give her time to warm up and you will never hear silence again.  At her recent doctors appointment she measured in the 40th percentile for height and 15th for weight ( a wee 23lbs).  She is our sweet little one.  Now that she is about turn two we are getting her involved in more extra curricular activities.

2 weeks ago she started soccer.  She goes once a week and she loves coming home to tell daddy all about it.  She understands the concept of dribbling and is getting pretty good at it.  Here are some fun pictures from her first two sessions.

Go Team!

Listening to Coach

In a few weeks she will also be started ballet… or tutus for two.  We will see how much ballet she actually does.  She does love her new dance outfits.

"Mommy, I pretty" - yes baby, yes you are

And in late May she will be starting swim.  Today we went to get her a couple swim suits for the summer.   This girl loves to shop and even more she loves herself some shoes.  Lucky for her she is our only girl and will probably reap the benefits.  Once we got home she wanted to try on all her new clothes oh and take pictures to send to Daddy.  ”I show Daddy.”  The girl can seriously melt your heart.

She is very excited to be getting a new baby.  She loves to give my belly lots of kisses.  While I”m almost positive she doesn’t really understand what it means to her I am sure she will definitely be a big helper.   She will also struggle with losing a little mommy time but she does love time with daddy and she has a lots of activities to give her some one on one time as well.  I am positive that she is a pretty much the cutest little girl ever.

Progress

I have so much exciting news to share on the autism front.   In my last few posts I’ve been talking about how we put C on a GFCF diet and we have been completely GFCF for 3 full weeks.  It took a little while to get there but we made it.   He has responded really well.   When we initally tried this a few months ago we found that he didn’t eat what we gave him.  We saw that he does much better through out the day with his picture schedule so we decided to try that with his menu.  We created a picture menu where he can see each meal a head of time.  Once we started that he started eating what we gave him.  We found that he was eating more then usual.  Since starting the picture menu he will at least eat some if not all of his food.

C's Menu

We keep his schedule in the fridge so he can reference it as needed.

Menu

As he eats specific meals we remove them and place them back in his PECS book so he can use them as needed.  He often will decide he wants something different and will just pick something from there and ask for it.  Yay for communication!

PECS Communication book

We keep that close to the menu to prevent confusion.  In the past two weeks we’ve seen amazing progress with C.   Its like the fog has lifted and he’s more alert than before.  He is using more words and spontaneous speech.  He initiates play with his sister.  When called he will answer or act on the first command without repeated requests.  Both his teacher and his speech therapists have mentioned a difference.  Caleb will greet and say goodbye to his teacher without being prompted.  I am just so excited.  This past week during his swim lesson his instructor said he made huge leaps.  He was better able to focus.  He would swim (granted with the noodle) to her from 10 feet away.   He swam 2 ft from me to his instructor under water with no problem.  Its just so amazing to see him blooming.  While we still have a long way to go I can easily say I’m a believer in the diet.  While its  a little work to plan all his meals out the week before its totally worth it!

If all of that was not enough he has had a major breakthrough in potty training.   This past President’s Day we did the pantless training method.  He essentially ran around naked all weekend.   Without prompting he has started to stop what he is doing to go use the bathroom on his own.  Can you believe it?!  I wasn’t sure if we would get him trained in the next year and here he is doing it.  We only a couple accidents this weekend and none while we were out.  I’m in complete and udder shock.   As if that is not enough Isabella of course has to do what he does and she is almost trained too.  I will be beyond excited if I can get them both out of diapers before Baby A arrives.  Especially since I had already accepted I would probably be changing 3 kids in diapers.  I’m trying not to get ahead of myself but I’m just so proud of them.

We are also in the process of starting with a new Developmental Peditrician that is local.  We are hoping she could give us some great insight as to C’s developmental needs.  We have also applied for the GenRescue grant and our fingers are crossed that we will be accepted in the next group starting in May.  GenRescue assist with biomedical intervention in children with ASD.  Many children have seen great progress from it and usually respond to the GFCF diet (which we now know C does well on).   C is scheduled to start horseback riding in May with Equi-Ed.  He’s been on horses a few times and is so calm and relaxed when he rides.  I’m anxious to see how he responds.   We also have a meeting with Cheryl at Cheryl Teaches Music to provide C with piano lessons.  I have been so excited to find so many options for special needs children out there.   Caleb is so active and provding him with various different outlets that provide him both a comfortable envoirnment and stimulate his mind has been really great.

I promise to have an Isabella related post soon as she is doing so many amazing things too.  I can’t even believe this girl is only 21 months!

Just a friendly reminder that I am walking in the Austim Speaks walk on April 14th with other special needs moms.  If you would like to support us you can in the ticker on the right. Thank you!!

For the Love of Love!

Happy Valentine’s Day!! I know there are mixed feelings about today but I love day about love.  I don’t think the day should be focused on being in a relationship but appreciating those loved ones you have in your life.  I spent more money on my mom’s gift than I did my husband’s.  Use today to tell your family and friends what they mean to you.  In the spirit of today I appreciate all my readers that take the time to not only read my blog but to give comments and advice.   I appreciate all my tweeps that encourage me to run harder and be better every day.  I have amazing friends and family that bring so much happiness into my life.  I have a wonderful loving husband and children that I am grateful for each day.  I have been truly blessed by God and I’m appreciative of that.  So go out and tell those people that have positively influenced your life that you appreciate them.  Sometimes we need a day to remind how lucky we really are. So here is what we did for the day of love…. My muchkins made heart hands for their grandmothers Donavan and I went to dinner and saw Safe House on Saturday night for our Valentine’s Day date night.  He also bought me these lovely roses: and I got him some almonds (pun intended) with a note that says “I’m Nuts For You”  (Thank you pintrest) and a gift card for shoes. For breakfast I made heart shaped french toast which was a huge hit.  C helped me make the shapes. And my kiddos rocked their red.

Ridiculously Cute!

I love that face

I hope you all have a beautiful Valentine’s Day!!

Frogs and snails, and puppy dog tails

Thats right its a BOY!  A few weeks ago we hosted a Gender Reveal party to find out Baby A’s sex with some of our friends.  I have to give a big shout out to my amazing friend Michelle that made it all happen.  She not only did the reveal but took all the pictures.  She truly made this day super memorable and I can’t say thank you enough!! Here are some of her amazing pictures from that day!  You can also view the slideshow here.
